The Difference Engine: “Engaging with N”
The six women selected for the first round of TIFF Nexus’ The Difference Engine project headed up by Jim Munroe and Mare Sheppard, met for the second time on Wednesday, Aug. 17th to present their custom-designed levels for Sheppard’s award-winning game N. Co-created with Raigan Burns, the freeware platformer features a built-in level editor called NEd (or N Editor) that allows players to produce their own levels and in the context of this project provided an excellent sandbox for the jam’s burgeoning game designers to experiment in and explore.
“Part of the idea with making N levels was to have the participants start thinking about design and creating an experience for players as they explore options for their own game projects.” wrote Mare Sheppard in an e-mail when I asked her about inclusion of N in the Jam. “It is kind of a brief intro to game design and an opportunity to get the creative juices flowing.”
Check out the some examples of the participant’s custom N levels below.
